What are Future Problem Solvers?

We want to solve the world’s problems and we need your help.  After winning the state Future Problem Solving (FPS) competition, seven of us from Brainerd Public Schools were invited to the FPS International Conference at UMass Amherst, MA June 7-11, 2023.  We are excited to represent our community and the State of Minnesota among kids from all over the country and around the world.  You can help us get there.

The mission of Future Problem Solvers is, “To develop the ability of young people globally to design and achieve positive futures through problem solving using critical and creative thinking.”  We have studied several future topics this year including virtual reality and robotics in the workforce.  The state topic was throwaway society. We came up with several solutions like fashion bucks, reusing clothes, banning clothing trends on social media, school uniforms, and biodegradable clothes.

For the international conference our topic will be currency.  We are researching cryptocurrency, central bank digital currency, and global currency.  At the competition, we will be given a future scene written about 20 years into the future.  We will define challenges in the future scene and choose an underlying problem that has a significant impact.  Then we will find creative, unique solutions for that problem using our research.  Next, we develop criteria to rank our solutions and determine the best solution by developing its advantages, limitations, and unique opportunities.  Then, an action plan is developed for our best solution.  After we complete our written action plan, we get to create a skit as a team to showcase our plan.  These presentations are one of our favorite parts of FPS.

We have been working really hard and studying challenging material.  We are learning valuable problem solving and team building skills that will make us successful and productive citizens in the future.  This opportunity to meet and work with kids from all over the world is invaluable.
