Brainerd History Week is June 12-17, 2017.

Monday, June 12

9 am – Downtown Brainerd History Walk. Meet at the Brainerd Public Library (rain or shine) a few minutes prior to scheduled walk. There are no stairs or steep grades. Please wear appropriate walking shoes. We’ll be walking about 1.4 miles. Contact Carl Faust with questions, fertfaust@msn.com

3 pmRiverview Brainerd History Walk. This walk starts at the parking lot SOUTH of the High Rise Parking lot, and goes to Kiwanis Park, Buster Park, then around Boom Lake.  Meet in the lower parking lot a few minutes prior to the walk. The distance is 1.9 miles, and it takes about an hour. Contact Carl Faust with questions, fertfaust@msn.com

6-8 pm (doors open 5:30) – Music through the decades at Tornstrom Auditorium. Enjoy up to 10 minutes of slides and live music from each decade, starting from the 1900’s to current day.  Contact Laura Busch with questions, 331-2251.

 

Tuesday, June 13

2 pm – Genealogy Program – Descendants of the Brainerd settlers at the Library. Contact Jolene Bradley with questions, 829-5574.

Wednesday, June 14

10 am – 2 pmArmory Open House will highlight Brainerd’s Military History in the Colonel Miller Room and the Regimental Room. Our display includes the 34th Tank Company starting in 1936, 94th Tank Battalion in WWII, Mobilization for Korean War, and Deployments to Iraq. The Camp Ripley Military Museum staff will be set up in the Regimental Room with a WWII display of US and Japanese uniforms and equipment as worn in Bataan. Walter Straka, the last survivor of Bataan, 194th Tank Battalion will be in the Regimental Room from 11am – 1 pm. Grilled brats will be served curbside on Wright street from 10 am to 2 pm. 4 pm – Flag Day Ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial (near courthouse). Social hour at The Elks Lodge to follow.

Thursday, June 15

1-5:30 pm – NP Center Tour. Guided tours will be scheduled every 30 minutes, starting at the Clock Tower building. You determine your ending location – The NP Center for light refreshments, or Roundhouse Brewery. Contact Rick Fargo with questions, 839-5758.

5-8 pm – Learn some River History as you participate in the Community Paddle down Mississippi River. Launch from Evergreen Cemetery Landing. $20/person to rent a kayak/canoe, or you are encouraged to bring your own. Friday, June 16

2 – 4:30 pm – Enjoy at your leisure, a Centennial Birthday Celebration for the Historical Society’s building, along with a new display featuring the recent privy dig bottles. 320 Laurel Street, Brainerd. Contact Pam Nelson with questions, 829-3268

2:30 pm – County/Society Ceremony & Re-dedication of the museum building.

 

Saturday, June 17

10 am – Did you know that SE Brainerd once had an airport? Join us as we dedicate a marker for Rosko Field. Ceremony will take place at Shipman Auto Parts, 1711 SE 13th Street, Brainerd. You are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Contact Mike with questions, 612-750-2981.
